Fire Festival

In this festival, people bring their old talismans from the previous year to the shrine. The talismans are purified with sacred fire.

This is the largest event of its type in Japan.

This festival is famous for its procession of semi-naked worshipers, which is designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Sendai City.

The procession of semi-naked worshipers started when sake brewers started coming to worship at the shrine in their work clothes to pray for success in brewing.

Many other groups began to copy the sake brewers, impressed by their discipline and bravery in the cold of winter.
